Before You Go

Day 1 Downtown and Midtown: Coffee, History, Animals, and Dinner

Everything on Day 1 is within about 10 minutes of Abilene Heritage. You will spend most of the day in the downtown and midtown area with almost no backtracking.

Breakfast

Breakfast Before You Head Out

The Flipping Egg on Ridgemont Drive opens at 7am and is the go-to for a proper sit-down breakfast in Abilene. Fluffy pancakes, biscuits and gravy, Texas Hash, and a full egg menu. It is a local favorite and a great way to fuel up before a full day. If you want something lighter and closer to downtown, Sweet Thyme Kitchen on N. 6th St is a bakery and coffee bar with fresh baked goods and a warm, welcoming vibe.

Then grab coffee: Front Porch Coffee Co. is at 702 N. 2nd St, right across the street from Frontier Texas. Grab a drink to go and walk straight over.
Late Morning

Joe Allen's BBQ

Joe Allen's opens at 11am and that is exactly when you want to show up. Get there right when the doors open, before the lunch crowd arrives. Slow-smoked brisket, ribs, and sausage over pecan wood, ordered at the counter and eaten family-style. An Abilene institution since 1978 and still the best BBQ in the city by a wide margin.

Order: Brisket plate with pinto beans and jalapeño cornbread. The sausage link is worth adding too.
Mid-Morning

Frontier Texas!

The most unique museum in West Texas. Life-size holographic projections of real historical figures walk you through the full story of West Texas from the Comanche era through the cattle drives and early settlements. Give it 90 minutes. It is genuinely impressive, and unlike any museum you have been to. Kids love it. Adults usually stay longer than they planned.

Note: Closed Mondays. Open 9am Tue-Sat, 1pm Sundays.
Afternoon

Abilene Zoo + Nelson Park

Head to the Abilene Zoo in the early afternoon. It is 12 acres with over 1,000 animals, including giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and Komodo dragons. The Africa exhibit and giraffe feeding experience are the highlights. Budget two to three hours. Nelson Park is right next door if you have kids who need to run around after.

With kids: Bring sunscreen and water. The zoo is mostly exposed to the sky and gets hot by 1pm in summer.
Evening

Cork & Pig Tavern

End day one with a proper dinner at Cork and Pig. Chef-driven modern American food, a serious wine list, and a rotating seasonal menu. Known for a 5-day brined pork chop and house-made buns. It is the kind of place that would stand out in any big city. Make a reservation if you are going on a Friday or Saturday.

After dinner: Grain Theory Brewing Co. is nearby for a drink. Great outdoor seating and a local crowd.
Day 2 South Side Morning, Dyess Afternoon, Perini Ranch Dinner

Day 2 flows south in the morning (state park and Buffalo Gap area), swings northwest for Dyess in the afternoon, and ends back south at Perini Ranch for dinner. Each stop is a clean 15 to 25 minute drive with no doubling back mid-day.

Morning

Abilene State Park

Grab coffee on the way out. Statesman Coffee has a location on Buffalo Gap Road heading south, right on your route to the park. Pick up drinks to go and you arrive at the trailhead already sorted. Abilene State Park is 529 acres of cedar and mesquite with a free-roaming bison herd you can spot right from the road. The Buffalo Wallow Trail is the classic hike, easy enough for everyone. Mornings are the best time to see the bison and beat the heat. Budget about two hours including the 25-minute drive.

Day pass: $7 per person. Bring cash or the Texas State Parks app. Dogs welcome on leash.
Lunch

Galveston Seafood Company

After a morning outdoors, Galveston Seafood Company is a great call for lunch. Yes, there is excellent seafood in the middle of West Texas and this is the place that proves it. The blackened catfish, shrimp plates, and Redfish Pontchartrain are all regulars favorites. A totally different vibe from the BBQ on Day 1 and a nice way to break up the trip before heading to Dyess in the afternoon.

Afternoon

Dyess Linear Air Park

Dyess Air Force Base is home to the only active B-1B Lancer wing in the entire Air Force. The Linear Air Park along the base perimeter is open to the public with no pass required and displays a full line of restored aircraft including a B-1B, B-52 Stratofortress, F-111 Aardvark, and C-130 Hercules. Walk it at your own pace. Free, takes about an hour, and the planes up close are genuinely jaw-dropping.

Dinner

Perini Ranch Steakhouse

End your trip the right way. Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap is a national icon. Mesquite-grilled steaks, cast-iron jalapeño cornbread, cold drinks, and a wide-open porch with nothing but West Texas sky in every direction. It has been featured in national magazines and on television, and five decades of loyal customers keep coming back. This is the dinner people talk about for years. Make a reservation.

Order: The Buffalo Gap ribeye. The cornbread comes first and you will want more of it.
